Plastic Recycling Awareness

New California Recycling Laws Take Effect July 1, 2007

Bottles and Cans: Consumers will pay a penny more on the purchase of recyclable bottles and cans. The fee was increased to 5 cents on plastic, glass and aluminum containers under 24 ounces and 10 cents for larger containers. The amount paid back to consumers when they recycle the containers had been increased by a penny January 1 from a surplus in CRV funds collected last year. The 40 percent of unclaimed deposits go toward various recycling programs.

Plastic Bags: Supermarkets will be required to to start providing bag-recycling bins for consumers, label bags to indicate they can be recycled and provide reusable bags as an alternative to plastic. It has been estimated that more than 52,000 tons of disposable bags were used in California in 2000, but less than 50 tons were recycled. The disposal cost for plastic bags is estimated to be more than $51 million per year.

CaterGreen! has been working with the City of Los Angeles in outreaching their "It's Our L.A! Keep It Clean" program to encourage residents to return plastic grocery bags to stores for recycling.
